(Re)Learning How to Provide our Own Food
The educational opportunities associated with providing our food locally are endless and cover many disciplines. Our food system is the most accessible, yet it is influenced by many invisible structures.
Historically, we always provided food for our region, but that changed with industrialized food and transportation. Currently food travels hundreds of miles and as long as fossil fuels are subsidized, we will continue to rely on food produced far from our homes. Unfortunately this results in continually degrading ecosystems and social/economic inequity.
Restoring our food systems covers topics in Ecology, Leadership, Economics, Politics, etc., etc. If we are successful in redesigning our local food system, we will have to come together as a community, reimagine our relationship to the land and reestablish our influence in everyday decisions.
This effort starts in our schools as we reeducate our youth, moves to our community centers as we reestablish connections with our neighbors and continues to our economic and political systems as we regain our sovereignty
